Morris column used for advertising; such columns were installed from the mid-19th century onwards.
The column on Châtelet square, erected in 1808 to commemorate Napoleon's victories. The pedestal is more recent (1858).
Many people were killed during the French Liberation during World War II. Paris was fred from the German occupation in a few days after August 24 1944.
