Hotel de Cluny

The Hotel de Cluny was built as a house for the abbots of the Cluny abbey in Burgundy in 1334, and rebuilt in the late 15th century in the flamboyant gothic style by Jacques d'Amboise, abbot of Cluny. The hotel is located next to and above the former Roman baths and it now hosts a museum dedicated to the middle ages.

Despite extensive restorations inside (12 layers of paintings were discovered in a room) the outside of the building retains a traditional gothic aspect; also the layout of the rooms inside has not changed even during the restorations. The hotel de Cluny was the first Parisian private mansion between a courtyard and a garden.

The northern baths are the largest gallo-roman monument in Paris. They were built around 200 AD and partly destroyed by Barbarians in 285 AD. In the 13th century the structure was still there but it collapsed in 1737. The baths included a cold, a likewarm and a hot bath.
